Revoked Accounts and Suspended Statuses Are Ruining Writers Inner Peace on Medium.
I always say, Don’t Solely Rely on any one medium.
It could destroy your inner peace.
Like, don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
If the basket falls, then all of your eggs will be broken.
But I am writing it again today for another reason.
In the last couple of weeks, I have seen on Medium that many writers lost their accounts. It could be revocation or suspension, and their enrollment status is unknown.
This issue is also increasing on Medium.
Another issue is with payouts through Stripe. My friend, Fabiha Binte Qausem, received her payment. She has a moderate amount of views and reads, as well as earnings.
But unfortunately, she has not received a single payout in three months. Her payouts are stuck between Stripe and Medium.
When she contacts Medium for support, they send her to Stripe, and Stripe sends her back to Medium.
It’s a horrible experience without a doubt!
It should have been clear.
Medium should have better customer support.
Probably, they will bring it to light in the future for a better customer experience.
However, from the perspective of a writer with true passion, they should not solely rely on only one medium.
What can you do as a writer?
First thing First, write every day. Consistency is the key.
If you are a true writer, you have to write every single day.
Yes, each and every day.
Don’t think about anything else during that writing period.
If you are a true writer, you have to write.
It’s the first and mandatory task for you.
But you may ask, how would I earn my living from my writing?
Don’t be disheartened!
I am not skipping this part.
I understand this concern.
Some might say motivational words.
Some might say it’s not necessary to earn from writing.
And some might say writers don’t earn their living from writing.
Wrong!
All of these are totally wrong.
It’s important to earn from writing.
It’s needed to earn a living from writing.
Even, it’s possible to earn from writing.
But why and how?
Unfortunately, schools do not teach any of this, even though it should have been the most important skill to learn — how to earn your living practically.
How to earn a living? Schools did not have a single lesson on it.
Even if you go for a writing degree from a prominent university, they skip it blindly.
I don’t have any idea why.
And those who say if you are a true writer, you must write and not worry about earning because writers don’t earn their living from writing —
I agree with the first part, obviously. But I don’t agree with the second and third opinions at all.
Instead, I get furious with this opinion.
Why? Because it’s totally wrong.
If you can’t earn your living from your writing, then you must seek other work. And if you do that, you can’t give much time to writing.
If you can’t give much time to writing, you can’t do it wonderfully, no matter how brilliant you are.
It won’t matter.
Earning your living from writing is essential when you are a writer.
Actually, it’s also possible.
It’s not only possible to earn your living from writing but also possible to become rich through writing.
Why?
Because writing is a skill. Through it, you can clearly describe your thoughts and experiences.
Everyone can be a writer.
In fact, everyone should be.
It clears your mind and enriches your skill.
Anyone can write, whether they are in another profession or want to become a full-time writer. Or they can simply write as a side hustle.
Anyone can take it as a full-time career to become rich.
Because writing is the easiest way to become rich, not just to earn a living.
But for this, you need a proven and consistent strategy.
You need to create your own work funnel.
How?
At first, come out of others’ control — other platforms’ algorithms.
They won’t give you proper freedom, ever.
So, what will you do? Will you leave all other social media?
No!
I am not saying this at all!
In fact, I would say at least take one social platform as your primary goal to be regular.
Because there is already an existing audience there.
But here is one essential-
That is, don’t solely rely on them.
When you first think about starting writing, you should do some basic and important tasks:
- Build your own website in your name.
- Take one social platform as your primary goal.
- Repurpose your content on 4–5 other platforms.
- Build your newsletter.
- Be a specialist in one skill.
What platforms should you use as a writer?
- Website
- Medium
- Quora
- X
But don’t expect to earn from your personal website in the beginning.
Even though it will be your final platform to work from.
I have said lots of things in this piece.
It is going to be long.
I am thinking of writing about it step-by-step so that you can find your path quickly.
Mine has taken decades to figure out and build my own writing category business, YES.
By the way, normally I don’t talk much about my business operations.
But now I thought I should share it more with all of you.
I got the idea to write about this from my friend Fabiha.
She was saying it will take a long time for her to start everything as she is struggling with Medium payouts.
I am starting this YES writing so that you don’t have to walk the same harsh path as me.
